Refurbishement of two listed chimneys for local brewer
Marstons Brewery in Cockermouth contacted MHADltd to request we act as project manager for the refurbishment of two chimneys at Jennings brewery in Cockermouth. After an initial inspection it was thought that both chimneys had to be partially demolished, however with the help of other consultants we found a company (Pendrich ltd) that could carry out the refurbishment work without demolition at a far less cost. The local authority were keen that the chimneys were kept in tact and indeed as they were in the curtilage of a listed building they requested the chimneys were re-build if part demolished. MHADltd managed to liaise with both Allerdale planning, Allerdale building control and conservation officers to agree a programme of refurbishment including the replacement of defective stonework, rebuilding the top section of the larger chimney, in situ repair of the cast iron cap of the smaller chimney and ultimately the lining of the larger chimney with a bespoke liner to aid longevity of the structure. MHAD ltd acted as client liaison with the contractor dealing with day to day queries and programme issues. Ultimately the chimney was completed in the Autumn of 2014 to satisfaction of all parties with a considerable saving of cost from the initial budget.
